Our Difference

Transparency in the pet food industry is a problem. It’s almost impossible to find out where your pet got their food from, or what the ingredients were. You wouldn’t buy intensively farmed chicken or caged chicken if you are like us. But you can’t have that option with pet food.

Worse, they can say whatever they like and get away with it. Notice how many pet food blurbs say “CAN include grass-fed beef” or “MAY include free-range chicken”?

It sounds deliberately misleading. I cannot find any evidence to support those vague statements.

Why Grass-Fed & Finished Beef are the Best

It’s obvious that Grass Fed is the latest buzzword, but what does it really mean?

All beef cattle in Australia are fed grass at one point. The term ‘Grass Finished’ is what you should be paying attention to.

Here’s why…

Beef cattle are usually raised on pasture until they reach 12-14 months of age. After that, they move to a feedlot to finish their grain. They spend the final months of their lives in small dirt yards. Feed lotting is the best way to gain a lot of weight (and the most meat) in a very short time.

It’s not the best system, but it is better from welfare and environmental perspective. The main problem with feedlot beef from fast-finished feedlots is it’s nutritional and quality.

Grass-finished beef, on the other hand, is a slower and more costly process, but it is much better when it comes to animal welfare and environmental impact as well as product quality.

Although the whole thing deserves its own article, let’s not forget to mention why it’s better.

The optimal ratio of Omega 3s and Omega 6s is found in grass-fed beef. Grain finished beef is more Omega 6-friendly than grain-fed beef, which can be highly inflammatory.

Grass-finished beef has five times the amount of CLA as its feedlot counterparts. CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid), a powerful antioxidant fatty acid that improves lipid profiles, and increases the overall health of your dog’s health, is called CLA.

CLAs claim to offer the following benefits:

• Enhance the function of your immune system
• You can aid your body to fight cancer by including 0.5% CLA in your dog’s diet. There have been numerous scientific studies that have proven this.
• CLAs can also reduce inflammation in the body. This can help reduce allergic reactions such as dry skin, itchy skin, and warm spots, among other conditions.

What’s the Provenir difference?

We are just at the beginning of something big, but we have to start small. As you know, smaller is more expensive.

This is not mass-produced beef from large, foreign-owned farms. Our livestock are not fedlotted or processed in large, scary facilities.

You will find what you see here mostly from Mum & Dad farmers. It is processed in a thoughtful, compassionate manner and packaged in a few passionate guys and gals from regional Victoria.
